New effect I am working on which I am calling "screen-space ray tracing" (SSRT). The shader calculates several rays in 3D space projected off the surface of each pixel and tries to guess whether they hit anything. It's not perfect because the rasterizer only has a partial picture of the 3D scene, but the ambient occlusion effect it produces is really nice. Notice the boxcar casts a shadow on the ground below, even though there is a gap between it and the ground.
